Blackfriars Then and Now

Blackfriars in the City of London gets its name from Black Frere, which refers to the French word for brother ('frère') and the black cappa worn by Dominican Friars that moved into the Holborn in 1276. The order's priory in the area was used for meetings of Parliament and the Privy Council as well as a divorce hearing for Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon in 1529 before it was closed in 1538 during the Dissolution of the monasteries.

After being adopted as the home of the Blackfriars Theatre and the base of the Society of Apothecaries, the original building was destroyed during the Great Fire. The site is now the location of Blackfriars Station and the Blackfriars name is used for nearby road railway bridges as well as the Blackfriars Millennium Pier along the River Thames. Opened in 1869 as the William Pitt Bridge, the Blackfriars Bridge was the third crossing built to connect the banks of the Thames after the ancient London Bridge and Westminster Bridge.
