Sutton Surrey is the main town within the London Borough of Sutton and the historical region of Surrey in South London. Most businesses in Sutton are small-and medium-sized enterprises, although there are several larger businesses based in and around the town's centre and the area continues to be regenerated.
One of the area's most important sectors is the film industry, and Sutton is one of two hubs for filming in south-west London, along with Wimbledon Studios in Colliers Wood. Other major employers include the Royal Marsden Hospital and the Institute of Cancer Research. Publishing company Reed Business Information, engineering company Subsea 7, international development company Crown Agents Ltd., and security provider G4S are also based in Sutton and have office space in the area.
Retail is also a major economic driver, and has been a major player in Sutton's economy since the Victorian era. Some retailers in the town heart have been operating from the same High Street location since the 1890s.
Sutton Common station offers commuters links to the London travel network, and West Sutton and Cheam railway stations are within easy walking distance. Colliers Wood, offering Northern line services, is a short 10 minute drive north from Sutton, and Sutton train station, on the Southern and Thameslink lines, is in the centre of town. Additionally, numerous bus routes service the area.
Sutton grew from a small village with coaching inns into a vibrant commercial area and shopping destination. The area is one of the safest in London and has more than 150 listed buildings. Much of the town is Victorian in style, with the area growing significantly in size and population with the arrival of railways in the middle of the nineteenth century. The High Street and the surrounding area in the centre of town are where much of Sutton's Victorian architecture is found.
At the same time, the area has a mix of architectural styles. The Sutton Lodge on Brighton Road is one of the oldest buildings in Sutton and an example of Georgian architecture. There are also examples of Edwardian architecture, as well as Art Deco and Moderne styles from the 1930s.
There are also more than 80 parks in town and surrounding borough, making up over 1,500 acres of green space. Sutton Green and Manor Park are in the centre of town. Sutton is also home to the Banstead Downs, the Anton Crescent Wetland and the Devonshire Avenue Nature Area.
