Aldersgate is an ancient part of the City of London that now forms a ward bounded by Aldersgate, Beech, Nobel, King Edward and Montague streets. It includes the Barbican Estate, which has the largest concentration of the City's residents. The area is named after a gate along the ancient London Wall that was built by the Romans in the second or third century. The name was likely adopted during the late Saxon period. Aldersgate was also the site of the former General Post Office, which closed in 1910 and later demolished.
