Aldersgate is an ancient part of the City of London that now forms a ward bounded by Aldersgate, Beech, Nobel, King Edward and Montague streets. It includes the Barbican Estate, which has the largest concentration of the City's residents. The area is named after a gate along the ancient London Wall that was built by the Romans in the second or third century. The name was likely adopted during the late Saxon period. The original gate was demolished and replaced in 1617 before it was removed in 1761. The area was the location for the Bishop of London's chapel and his chambers at London House. Aldersgate was also the site of the former General Post Office, which closed in 1910 and later demolished. Many of the area's historic buildings were destroyed or damaged during bombing in the Second World War.
Aldersgate's most famous attraction is the Barbican Centre, a large performing arts centre that serves as the home of the London Symphony Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Shakespeare Company.
