The Benefits of Having Plants in the Office

Indoor plants are arranged artfully in round bronze-coloured pots next to the rectangular white columns that rise to the ceiling in the middle of the workspace, and workstations are arranged next to the windows. In recent years, there has been a significant shift towards prioritising well-being in the workplace. As time goes by, businesses have a better understanding of how the environment impacts employee health and productivity. In a 2021 survey, nearly 70% of executives rated well-being as a top priority for their organisation.

As a result, many companies are increasingly focusing on their office workers’ quality of life, creating office spaces that support both physical and mental well-being. One of the most popular and effective ways to increase productivity and improve different measures of workplace satisfaction is by incorporating plants in the office, as we will see in this article.

The Physical Benefits of Indoor Office Plants

Plants absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, creating an oxygen-rich environment and improved air quality. Previously conducted laboratory studies by NASA have shown that plants can filter out volatile organic compounds and other harmful toxins present in plastics, inks, cleaning products, and some types of insulation.

Indoor plants can also regulate humidity levels. According to the HSE, low humidity is one of the causes behind sick building syndrome. Offices often suffer from dry air due to temperature control, heating and air conditioning systems and layouts that interfere with airflow. Plants draw water from the roots to their leaves, releasing moisture into the air and helping maintain optimal humidity levels.

During the past few years, environmental concerns have taken front stage in the UK’s construction market. This is a reflection of a generalised trend towards sustainability, which affects both residential and commercial existing space, including offices, as well as planned new builds. This trend mirrors the requirements and expectations of eco-conscious tenants and office occupiers, who are increasingly committed to sustainable workspace initiatives.

In this blog post, we explore the different ways in which office spaces in London are adopting eco-friendly and sustainable ventures, putting green innovation at the heart of the workplace.

6 Ways London Offices are Embracing Sustainable Practices

Harnessing Clean Technology: Five Strategies for Energy-Efficient Office Spaces

In the face of growing environmental concerns, the need for sustainable business practices is more urgent than ever. Climate change, resource depletion, and ecological degradation present pressing challenges that require immediate and collective action.

We’re all beginning to realise the profound impact our actions have on the planet. Businesses, in particular, play a significant role in this dynamic. According to the UK Green Building Council, the built environment contributes around 40% of the UK’s total carbon footprint. That’s a sobering statistic. But it also reveals an opportunity for transformation. As companies, we have the power to effect meaningful change by shifting towards more sustainable practices.

Central to this transformation is the adoption of clean technology, or ‘cleantech’. Clean technology refers to products, services, or processes that use renewable materials and energy, emit fewer greenhouse gases, and have a minimal impact on the environment. By reducing our carbon footprint, cleantech provides a path towards sustainability while offering economic advantages. This emerging sector holds great potential to redefine and shape a greener future for the corporate world.

At London Office Space, we understand the importance of this transition. For more than a decade, we have helped businesses of all sizes find their ideal workspace. Our mission, however, goes beyond simply providing office space. We are committed to fostering sustainable business practices and promoting energy-efficient workplaces across Central and Greater London.
